Foreword

Human image, independent on opinions of the majority of people in view of the beautiful or even the ugly, at the same time is a reflection of his or her mind also. Therefore, injuries and lesions that leave ugly scars, at the same time cause discontent equally as inborn ones or those gained with time aesthetic defects.

At the beginning of the last century, the expected life span for women was approximately fifty years. Nowadays, this life span in our region is estimated at approximately 76 years (in North America even 82 years), and the expected life span of a man is a bit shorter. Long life span is a consequence of societal and economic upswing and is the fruit of development of all areas of human activity. A man, therefore lives longer and comfortably, the technology makes available as recently as yesterday unimaginable benefits, as the fact of the certainty of getting old spoils the picture of perfection.

Physical health is not often completely sufficient to the people of good health condition. The wisdom of the flip side is not sufficient for a complete satisfaction, and inappropriate image in the mirror troubles even the most valuable mind.
The essence of a personal sensation of prosperity is not imaginable without satisfaction with one’s self, and even with one’s own look.

Aesthetic surgery, following reconstructive surgery, has recognized the challenge that provides the art of shaping the body, and so the scientifically based contributions to the art of surgical beautification have ever more significant part in modern medical science literature. Unfortunately, on this important surgical field of activity, there are not many easily comprehensible and readable works, which would aesthetic surgery procedures bring closer to numerous inquisitive readers.

The decision about the change of the look of one’s own body is not easy to make. No matter how much strong is the wish, insecurity and fear from the unknown undoubtedly cause anxiety and even the lack of appeal. Moreover, in spite of counselling with physicians and surgeons, where a patient learns about the operation itself, even there remain many issues that are incomplete.

The consorts Duško Maletić, a surgeon and an urologist, together with Ines Maletić, an anaesthesiologist, are a harmonious pair that for a long time so far deals with aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Professional excitement and enthusiasm lead them even farther in understanding and demanding skills they apply in their work. The basic training of these two dedicated workers at the leading Czech, Austrian, Swiss and American surgical institutions along with their 25 years of surgical experience, especially in aesthetic surgery operations, was also a stimulus for writing a book for general readers who do not have medical education.

In this new, enlarged and supplemented edition, the text is extensively illustrated with minutely selected drawings and photographs, which contributes to the comprehensibility and readability of the text that gives answers to basic questions on aesthetic operations. The authors simply lead us through the book and by interpreting basic terms instruct us about expert expressions, and clearly describe procedures that are ingrained in modern aesthetic surgery. At the same time, they minutely describe the procedures on the occasion of admission at the surgical institution, administrative requirements, the type of laboratory tests which are or is a pre-condition for surgical operations, selection of the type of anaesthesia, the course of operation, and at the end, they truly display the type of medical treatment of possible complications.

This booklet will even to a demanding reader discover many unknown data, and will be a stimulus for open discussion with the surgeon, during their personal contact. And, at least, it will undoubtedly give some courage that is lacking, to the hesitating, and so enable immeasurable satisfaction and authenticity in everyday life.
